What makes protein waters different is that they are often clear and have a smooth, water-like texture with no grit or creaminess. They often have a fruit-like flavor and contain no milk, being a dairy-free alternative to shakes and powders, although that doesn’t make them plant-based, as some contain whey protein.

Isopure can be credited as one of the pioneers of this trendy type of beverage, launching its protein beverages in the nostalgic glass bottles in 1998, before “protein water” was even a trend (which Isopure has since then ditched glass bottles). Now, different brands of protein waters can be seen all across grocery shelves and online stores.

As mentioned earlier, Isopure is the OG of protein waters and has a higher protein content than most of its competitors. However, it’s one of the most expensive protein beverages on the market.

Launched in January 2026, Beyond Meat’s new protein beverage won’t taste like vegan steak, but instead like a fruity sparkling beverage that’s one of the few plant-based waters on the market for those who want an alternative to whey-based waters.
